When India implemented a lockdown on 24th March 2020, lakhs of people who lived on daily wages came face to face with their worst nightmares—no income, no jobs, and uncertainty of the future. One part of our nation was stocking up on essentials, and another major section went hungry for days. At this time, Annamrita Foundation, an NGO in India, stepped up to help those in hunger and need. We leveraged our existing kitchens to cook one-pot meals for people who had lost their regular income. You can donate online and show your support for our mission against hunger.
If you have made an online donation to Annamrita, here is how we use the donation to fight hunger during the pandemic.
Lockdown—the root of unforeseen problems
During the pandemic and the resulting lockdown, we identified three primary groups that were impacted significantly. While one section of people who were dependent on daily income was affected, another section was hit badly as well—doctors, hospital staff, and quarantine patients. Furthermore, the municipal staff was affected by this as well, and without their participation, several cities such as Mumbai would have come to a standstill. To alleviate this situation, we created three schemes to ensure maximum coverage of people in the city. We were not the only NGO in Maharashtra fighting against hunger, and several organizations came forward to support our initiative.
Municipal staff feeding program:
In this scheme, we focused on serving the staff in departments such as Solid Waste Management, Maintenance, Public Health, Water, Social Justice, and Disaster Management. Your online donation helped them get the nutrition they deserve.
Hospital health staff feeding program:
Several people who work in hospitals—doctors, nurses, assistant staff, pathology staff, and office assistants—were directly in contact with people affected by not merely COVID-19, but several other diseases, making it difficult for them to step out and acquire food and other resources. We, at Annamrita, created this scheme to help the hospital teams who are battling the pandemic on the front lines. Your online donation helped spread this program wider.
Food for Life:
For nearly two decades, we proved our mettle as one of the best NGOs in India, especially when it came to nutrition. Using the experience and expertise that we had built over the years, Food for Life was created to provide meals to the underprivileged in the streets and slums across the country. Your online donation helped us support the lakhs of people in Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh.
So far, Annamrita Foundation has delivered over 1.8 crore meals across the nations. With your support, we can reach out to more people in need.
